I wrote a post about how I'm coping with having Coeliac Disease a year on from my diagnosis and though I admit it's been emotionally challenging learning to accept gluten free life I've begun to look for the positives and I'm trying to embrace life as a coeliac foodie. A family member tagged me in one of All Mine Cakes Facebook posts and I couldn't quite believe that such a place existed. A tea room that is entirely gluten free and the best part is it's just 30 minutes away.
Where Can I Find All Mine Cakes By The Lake?
All Mine Cakes By The Lake is situated on Maythorne Lane, Southwell, NG25 0RS. The tea room is easy to find using SatNav, ours led us straight to it. It is tucked away in the countryside so expect winding roads and tractors. Please don't go racing down the back roads as there is often oncoming traffic, children on bikes and families walking along the road in front of the tea room. The café is situated a stones throw from the Southwell trail and just 10 minutes down the trail is a children's play park, which has a small field and a fantastic play area with excellent climbing frames, swings and a roundabout. A visit to the tea rooms and a trip to the park is a great way to spend a hour or two.
What Food Does All Mine Cakes By The Lake Offer?
I've never seen such an extensive cake menu in any café, never mind a specifically gluten free one. I thought as a coeliac my days of gorging on cake were over but this place has certainly proved me wrong. There are brownies, blondies and cookie bars. There are traditional offerings such as scones, Victoria sponges and macarons and more adventurous cakes like rhubarb and custard. The variety is astounding and the lovely owner is always thinking up more. I follow her on Instagram and you can tell how passionate she is about providing the best quality gluten free goodies.
The hot food menu is more concise but has everything you need. There's sandwiches, toasties and breakfast foods. I had a sausage sandwich on gluten free tiger bread and it was amazing. The quality of the sausages was immediately obvious, they were meaty and flavoursome and the bread was soft and fresh. My non coeliac partner enjoyed his as much as any other gluten containing sandwich- perhaps even more due to it's excellent quality.
Do All Mine Cakes By The Lake Follow Covid Compliancy Procedures?
Yes. This is one of the safest places you could ever go to. Their procedure is perfect. Customers are greeted by a member of staff wearing PPE and asked to wait outside. You enter the tearoom to place your order one household at a time and are asked to use the sanitiser they have in place. You are free to browse the menu and I felt no pressure to hurry. Orders are placed at the counter with friendly staff also wearing PPE. Staff remind you to check in via the NHS app or leave your contact details. You then give your name and head to the outdoor waiting area. Orders are brought out and placed on a table for you to collect. You exit the area via a gate that is separate to the area where people are waiting to go in. It runs like clockwork and you don't have to be in close proximity to anyone.
You are welcome to eat in your car but are asked not to mill around the car park area- which I think is more than a fair request.
Is All Mine Cakes By The Lake Coeliac Safe?
Absolutely. I was assured that the entire premises are a gluten free zone. It's excellent to be able to enjoy gluten free food without worrying about cross contamination.
Overall Experience
I have been blown away by this place. Visiting a place whilst Covid measures are in place can be tough. The PPE, social distancing and 'rules' can lead a place to feel cold and unfriendly but All Mine Cakes By The Lake felt like a hug from a friend. It felt warm and cosy despite the restrictions. The staff were so welcoming and made such a fuss of my 3 year old daughter. The place is so well organised and feels so safe. The food is absolutely amazing quality and the cakes are such a treat for coeliacs I swear I could have cried!
I will be returning again and again and I can't wait to visit when the restrictions are lifted and we can sit outside on a summers day overlooking the lake and stuffing our faces with friends and family by our side.
