Living Arrows | The End Of An Era

'You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth' Khalil Gibran.

Just like that three whole years have passed and she's on her way to pre-school and whilst Iris feels like she's at the beginning of something special I can't help feeling like it's the end. The end of my baby being at home, the end of endless days spent playing together and the end of me being her teacher. I'm a little sad that she'll be asking someone else incessant questions about the whys, whats and hows of the world around her.

Growing up with undiagnosed Aspergers Syndrome and attending a mainstream school meant I had quite a difficult time at school and as we've been preparing for Iris to start school I've learnt that I am still holding on to quite a bit of trauma. Nevertheless i've done all I can to ensure Iris has a happy school experience. We've talked about it lots, we've role played school scenarios with her toys and I've tried to shield Iris from my negative experiences and I think we've done an okay job. She's been bristling with excitement in the week leading up to school and has bounced through the doors without a care in the world. She's on her third day now and her enthusiasm continues, we've had no tears just an excited little girl that's happy to learn and play with her friends. Already her experience is so different to mine and I am thankful for that and I hope it continues.

  1. Sounds like you have done an amazing job at getting her ready for going to school. I don't think they ever stop learning from us xx

  2. I can relate to this. I was bullied relentlessly at school and at the first sign of anything negative happening to Athena at school I break down completely. I find it so hard to deal with - and have cried in front of teachers so many times. But, our children are making their own paths and although it's so hard at times I have faith that the things we have been through have equipped us with the skills to help our children navigate school. I think Iris will love preschool and hopefully seeing her positive journey through it will help to ease some of your trauma too x

  3. Aww bless her. It is hard when they go off to school but I've found that my two get so much out of it - it's definitely worth it x #LivingArrows

Thank you for supporting me on my journey to raise awareness about mothers on the autistic spectrum. We do exist, we just need people to know we do!
